Another Excerpt from “Executive Justice” - Revised

Cal said, “This is still America, right?”

“Essentially the same rights and duties.”

“We’d like to visit our son. What used to be the USA should seek truth and reconciliation. Bind up the nation’s wounds, so to speak.”

“It sounds like you plan to restore the union all by yourself.” The official chuckled. “Around here, talking about restoration of the union is considered sedition.”

“I don’t follow.”

“Quoting Abe Lincoln’s second inaugural.”

“I still don’t get it.”

“We have a dearth of tourists from Coalition states. Do the math.”

“In 1867, a union soldier walked the path of Sherman’s March to the Sea, still in uniform and carrying the American flag. He was well-treated.”

“You may be a scholar of American history, but I don’t recommend trying a dangerous stunt.”

“A dose of goodwill wouldn’t hurt.”

“According to your papers, your visit is not political.”

“Correct, we’re not here to preach or proselytize.”

“Don’t wear a mask in public. People will recognize where you’re from and won’t welcome you. A mask is not like a Yankee soldier carrying the Stars and Stripes.”

“We can take care of ourselves.”

“Listen, Rambo, you’re in a foreign country. Don’t press your luck.”

Cal nodded. “I’m a physician. Wearing a mask is to protect other people.”

“It’s a scold, virtue signaling. You’ll receive a cold welcome. The pandemic has shut down Miami Beach and other tourist destinations.”

“You can see our itinerary among the papers you hold.”

The agent frowned, ruffling through their papers. “Someone at the consulate in LA made a big mistake. We no longer grant thirty-day visits.”

“We’re here. They approved our itinerary.”

“I checked you out. Y’all are legit, crazy but legal. I’ll let you stay - but not one minute longer than thirty days.”

“Thanks,” Carol said.

Cal nodded. “I’m excited to see our friends - and my son.”

“As for your planned side trip to Queer Land, uh the Keys, you’ll need a permit from them. I’ve approved your reentry, but we don’t speak for them - for traitors.”
